Mike Martz finally called the best game plan that fit his personnel resulting in the offense scoring 30 points and leading the way in the domination of the Minnesota Vikings.
I wrote before the game that Mike Martz' tenure with the Bears was in serious jeopardy if he did not prove that he could call a game plan which was appropriate for his personnel. At least for one game, Martz proved that his system could be adjusted to fit the Bears strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Whether it was keeping backs in the backfield to help chip on Jared Allen, or the near elimination of seven-step drops, or using Matt Speath to help on Jared Allen, Martz finally gave the Bears offense their best to succeed thereby building confidence and an identity.
For the first time all season, the Bears offense did not have any three and outs in a game. The Bears offensive line only gave up one sack of Jay Cutler, though he was hit five times in total. Even with great field position starting at their own 37 yard line on average, the Bears offense still gained 377 yards on offense. Matt Forte gained 87 yards at 5.1 yard per carry while Cutler threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
It's only one game, but that is the type of offensive game plan that the Bears have needed and will continue to need in order to give this team the best chance to win. Martz' job is still on the line. He can ill afford to try to get too cute again and risk damaging the fragile confidence that the offense has going for itself now.
Jay Cutler has already made critical comments regarding Martz' game plan. During the game Cutler was caught apparently cursing in Martz' direction via communication conduit Shane Day. Even after the game Cutler warned that “we need to be very judicious going forward with what we can do and can’t do.” If the Bears have any shot of making the playoffs in 2011 and if Martz has any desire to keep his job in 2012, he'd be very wise to heed Jay's warning going forward.
