The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers return to Soldier Field this Sunday to face the recently dominated Chicago Bears. The Bears can learn from their mistakes versus the Saints and hopefully have made a few necessary adjustments to ensure victory versus the Packers today.
Support Blocking
The biggest adjustment that the Bears can make from their embarrassing loss to the Saints would be to play the right support blockers. The offensive line will face another complex defense versus the Packers this week and can ill afford to have another terrible performance by their support blockers. The Bears need to start Matt Spaeth ahead of Kellen Davis if they want their best chance to succeed on every play. They cannot continue to risk the health of Jay Cutler for the continued possible growth of a career-long terrible blocker. With the news of Marion Barber being out for today's game as reported by Jason La Canfora, the Bears need to use fullback Tyler Clutts as a support blocker over Khalil Bell during the series where Matt Forte rests. If the Bears can make those two simple adjustments, they will significantly increase their chances for success on offense. I fear the alternative.
Roy Williams
With Earl Bennett being ruled out of the Packers game, Roy Williams needs to be the man for Jay Cutler today. Though the Packers have given up the most passing yards per game in the NFL, they still have Charles Woodson who had two interceptions and a fumble recovery while covering Steve Smith last week. I have a strong feeling that the Packers would love to be able to rotate Woodson on Forte occasionally in order to eliminate him from the Bears offensive arsenal. It would be similar to when they had him matched up on Greg Olsen last year. If Roy Williams can keep the chains moving and win the war if not all of the battles versus the Packers secondary, it could force the Packers to keep Woodson on Roy for most of the game, thereby opening up opportunities for the other receivers.
Matt Forte Touches
Forte has been the backbone of the offense to say the least. Though I expect the Packers to try to possibly put Woodson on Forte, when Woodson's in the nickel, to try to hamstring the Bears offense, Martz needs to make sure they continue to give Forte his touches on offense. Whether it's screens, draws, wheel routes, or runs, they must continue to feed the ball to Forte. Good things happen more often than not when Forte has the ball in his hands. He can make up for the blocking mistakes as he has been doing already the first two games of the season. If the Bears play the right support blockers, he'll do even more.
Safety Discipline
Defensively speaking, this is the number one key to stifling the Packers offense. The Packers like to maintain a high tempo on offense and have been incorporating the no-huddle as needed in order to do so. The Packers main weakness versus the Bears defense in the past has been their lack of patience. The Packers like to get yardage in chunks and hit the big passing play out of the play-action. Rodgers and head coach/offensive play caller Mike McCarthy eventually get frustrated at having to dink and dunk the ball down the field and end up forcing balls deep. As long as the Bears safeties can play disciplined within their scheme and are always the last man deep, that will allow them to be in position to take advantage of the Packers inevitable forced deep balls. It will be a tough task for whomever it is that lines up opposite of Brandon Meriweather.
Final Pick: Packers 30 Bears 20
As much as I'd love to pick the Bears in this game I cannot just yet until I see what kind of adjustments they've made after last week's offensive disaster. Though I can easily see the Bears winning this game if they make the right adjustments, the odds still favor the Green Bay Packers. Despite Rodgers being off on multiple offensive series early this season, their offense is still running very well, if not yet clicking on all cylinders. I expect the Packers to eventually score at least two touchdowns on offense with a third likely coming via a turnover. I think the Bears offense will do better and score two touchdowns of their own, but I do expect to see more growing pains as they continue to find their rhythm in this young season. The problem is they need their offense to step up today in order to give themselves a fighting chance versus the defending champion Green Bay Packers. Nevertheless, I'll still be cheering and supporting my team in the hopes that they can prove me and the rest of the football world wrong.
